The Maven Gypsy was the original farmhouse in the area. Built by the Morrison family as a working farm with potato crops, an apple orchard, livestock including horses, cows, pigs and fowl. In days gone by the home was locally referred to as, "the house on the hill". Visiting doctors servicing the surrounding community would arrive on horseback and stay in a small "apartment" in the barn shaped building beside the home. In effect this made, "the house on the hill" the original hotel in the area long before tourism became popular in Cape Breton.
The friendly people of the community still remember DJ Morrison fondly as a larger than life character.
The Maven Gypsy Bed & Breakfast and Cottages is an excellent base camp for exploring all Cape Breton Island has to offer. We are the last stop before Cape Smokey and a skip and a jump from the Highlands National Park.
The Maven Gypsy B and B and Cottages is located at Wreck Cove. It is three minutes from a cobble beach on the Cabot Trail. The property consists of a main house with four guest rooms overlooking the sea and four cottages which are nestled at the base of a mountain behind the house. From the house guests can watch the ferry sail to Newfoundland and the lobster fishers set and pull their traps. Various restaurants can be found within 9 km from the property.
The Main House - The Maven Gypsy B and B and Cottages has been welcoming guests since May 2003. It offers four quaint rooms each of which has a private bathroom. We offer a variety of breakfast options, fresh baked goods and home cooked food. Our chickens may very well greet you upon your arrival!
The Cottages each include a fully equipped kitchenette - pots, pans, and cutlery too! Each boasts a view of the surrounding hills from their decks. Guests are invited to use the picnic table available for each cottage.
We look forward to sharing more stories of the Morrison clan and, "the house on the hill" with you.
