Situated on a mid-19th century estate in the Hudson Valley and the foothills of the Catskills, the Hudson Valley Rose Bed and Breakfast is a lovingly preserved gem that sits amidst acres of sprawling fields and stately trees. At various points in its history, the estate had belonged to a prosperous farmer, the family of an internationally renowned furnishings empire, a legendary makeup artist, and a successful pair of fashion designers.
The inn bears a rare and prized characteristic that sets it apart from other pre-Civil War houses: The original structure is set more than 200 yards from the road, granting it the privacy most old homes had sacrificed for proximity to bygone village commerce and social goings-on. Stroll down the tree-lined driveway toward the stone house (erected in 1847) and you'll pass a vegetable field and horse pasture, and possibly spot a breathtaking variety of small birds, chipmunks, deer or even a wild turkey.
Choose from four indulgent guest rooms, each one named for a historical connection to the estate:
The beautiful and serene Ashley Room - in honor of Laura Ashley who owned the estate at the height of her career - featuring a claw foot tub alongside a magnificent original exposed-stone wall;
The elegant Wilkison Suite - in honor of the young master mason who cut and laid the house's stone - anchored with hand-hewn beams and exposed stone walls in both its bedroom and sitting room;
The expansive Clarkson Room - in honor of a pair of designers who tastefully restored the estate - comprising the top floor of the stone house with a spacious bathroom starring a luxurious freestanding air jet tub; and
The stunning Manchester Cottage - in honor of the estate's past owner who had the cottage fashioned from 18th and 19th century barn wood salvaged from Upstate New York.
From our door, a short drive (or bike ride) north brings you to the beautiful Minnewaska Park and New Paltz, the historically French village with the oldest authentic street in America. To the west and northwest are the Catskill Mountains, Bethel Woods (of Woodstock fame) and the Upper Delaware recreation area. Further east are West Point, the FDR Presidential Library, Vanderbilt Mansion and the Culinary Institute of America.
Start your morning at the inn with a sumptuous made-to-order breakfast accompanied by fruits, breads/pastries, juice, and gourmet coffee. Enjoy all-day refreshments - in your room and the common guest areas - of healthy snacks and beverages. As the sun begins to set, join fellow guests for a glass of wine or beer during Rose Hour and exchange tales of your adventures - or your naps!
