Wow! What an elegant place Newport, Rhode Island is! With it’s “summer mansions” that are large enough to play a football game in. Newport is really a city on Aquidneck Island.
Although the population is under 30,000, it is a thriving city. It was founded in 1639. Newport has one of the highest concentrations of colonial homes in the nation, in the downtown Newport Historic District, one of three National Landmark Districts in the city. Many of these homes were restored in the late 20th century through grants made by Newport resident Doris Duke.
It is safe to say that if it were not for Doris Duke, Newport would have lost dozens of their beautiful old homes.
