Four delightfully mild seasons' with average annual daily temperatures of 74 and 46 degrees, and total annual precipitation of only 17 inches makes for an ideal getaway destination year round.
In addition to its unique and startling natural beauty, the vibrant city with a residential population of 16,000 has become nationally recognized as a creative and spiritual center, attracting artists, writers and visitors from around the world, highlighted by over 40 art galleries and significant cultural facilities.
As we were driving back home last month from Palm Springs we stopped for three days in Flagstaff, Arizona. Having not a clue what to expect, we were greatly surprised. It's population is just 55,000.
There are tons of things to see and do in Flagstaff and one of our favorites was the Lowell Observatory which was founded in 1894 (the planet Pluto was discovered there). It is located just about a mile West of downtown and they have a good visitors center. Most evenings the telescopes are available for public viewing. Don't miss the 24 inch wide telescope. When we visited we got to see the planet Saturn with all it's fabulous rings and was a real treat to see.
The Riordan Mansion, a 13,000 sq. ft., 40 room log cabin style mansion was built in 1904 for two brothers who married two sisters and started the logging industry in Flagstaff. One of the first structures in town with electricity and indoor plumbing, it was a grand house for its day. The furnishing are of the Mission and Craftsman styles with many original Stickley furniture and everything is original to the house. Guided tours only on the hour. Call 928/779-4395 for reservations. It is located just a short distance South of downtown.
