HISTORIC MANSION CIRCA 1840 ON MARTHA'S VINEYARD

Standing guard at the entrance to historic Edgartown, The Shiverick Inn welcomes you to this seaside village of 19th century mansions. Built during the town’s heyday as a whaling port. White picket fences, daintily manicured gardens and ancient, spreading linden trees are the hallmark of this peaceful town.

Built in 1840 for Dr. Clement Francis Shiverick, the town physician, and situated at the prominent corner of Pease’s Point Way and Pent Lane. The Shiverick Inn offers a delightful blend of past and present. Great care was taken in its recent restoration to preserve the architectural details of this gracious mansion revive its romantic ambience and exquisitely recreate its elegant grandeur.

As soon as you enter the immaculate ground, you become a part of a different world, a simple but grandly romantic sequence of visual pleasures and physical comforts purposely designed to enchant the senses and enrich the spirit. Each of the one-of-a-kind guestrooms, suites and common rooms recalls a bygone era, transporting the Inn visitors back to a time when dedication to tradition, elegance and comfort were imperative. Through painstakingly attention to detail, the Inn has meticulously preserved the graceful formalities of this distinctive period, blending American, French and English 18th and 19th century antiques with rich fabrics, fine wall-papers, oriental rugs and vivid colors borrowed from the New England landscape. Even the random width floorboards throughout the Inn are worn to a glowing patina only one and a half centuries of perpetual footsteps could achieve.

The Inn is embellished with nine working fireplaces, a beautiful grand piano, private bathrooms, central air, garden room, drawing room, library, terraces and formal garden. The rooms are graced with luxurious finely pressed linens, down comforters and French milled soaps. Savor a sumptuous gourmet breakfast by the fire in the garden room between 8:30-10:00 a.m. and experience our freshly baked pastries at 4:00 p.m. tea. We are within walking distance of many fine restaurants, charming fashion boutiques, cinema, antique shops, art galleries, sunny beaches, rambling bicycle paths, interesting nature trails and local historical museums.

Summer brings an abundance of cultural to the island. Concerts, films, theatre, arts festivals, fairs, poetry readings and receptions are but a sampling of the activities. Autumn, winter and springs have special qualities, each with its own richness and reflection of New England’s heritage. There simply is no off-season on Martha’s Vineyard, just a choice between the vibrancy of summer, the magical autumn air and shell-hunting on a deserted beach, the solitude of winter’s pristine snow, the joyous celebration of Christmas with caroling, horse and carriage rides, open-houses and cheese and wine tastings or the rebirth of spring bringing forth new textures and ambiance to an unchanging cycle.

Inspired day’s end with your choice of where to dine, and perhaps even a stroll through the narrow storybook streets of Edgartown. Evenings at the Inn deserve special mention for it is then the crackling fireplaces invite you to meditate in repose, nurturing happy new memories you’ll cherish until you return again.
