Ancestors of our American Indians were the first to travel through the area as they hunted and made the Rockies their home. In 1859, Joel Estes arrived with his family and started a new life here. Others soon followed to trap, hunt and prospect, but the beauty captivated them and many of them stayed here to raise families.
Estes Park began to grow, in 1917 the town was incorporated. Men like F. O. Stanley, better known as "The Grand Old Man of Estes Park", invested in the development of Estes and helped open banks, bring electricity to the town, and found the stately Stanley Hotel which opened in 1909 and remains open today.
Estes Park continues to flourish, and is the center of operations for the Colorado Big Thompson Reclamation Project. Having survived two major floods, it has earned the name "Gutsiest Little Town in Colorado."
