Things to Do in and Around Pahoa The easternmost corner of the Big Island is home to the district of Puna, a historical area that offers countless treasures. Here you can feel free to slow down, completely unwind and explore the extraordinary abundance. Just down the road: Kehena Beach: A 2 minute drive or a 10 minute walk from Ocean Spirit. Natural black sand beach - look for the dolphins and turtles or see the whales January-April. Sunrise and sunset hikes on the lava fields. Lava Tree State Park: A gentle 30-60 minute forest walk through moss-covered lava tube trees and monkeypod trees. Volcanoes National Park: Home of Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of fire.
