In the remote interior of British Columbia, halfway between Williams Lake and the fishing village of Bella Coola, lies the small community of Kleena Kleene.
In the heart of Tsilhqot'in territory and criss-crossed by the Klinaklini and McClinchy Rivers, it is snuggled between Ts'ylo-s Park and Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, offering many beautiful photographic opportunities.
The Chilcotin (Tsilhqot'in) is an expansive region renowned for its varied topography, abundant wildlife and spectacular landscapes from rolling fields to snow topped mountain peaks, and grasslands to rainforests.
Perkins Peak is the natural landmark of the area and you can make its 9,250 ft summit in a day and still be back to your cabin in time for dinner and a sunset.
Wildflowers along the trails are spectacular around the second week of July and from this peak not only can you see the vast flatness of the Chilcotin Plateau, but also spectacular views of the Pantheon, Waddington, and Niut Mountain Ranges as well as the Monarch Icecap and Klinaklini Icefield.
A relatively easy hike, the Klinaklini Falls are just 7 km off Hwy 20, but devote at least 2 hours to this outing. Bring clothing for any extreme in weather for while it may be very hot during the day, summer nights can bring a frost.
There are many other hikes in the area, but if you are interested in seeing the Chilcotin from a different perspective, make arrangements in advance of your visit to take in flight seeing tours, horseback riding and extended alpine horseback trips, guided hikes, kayaking, canoeing, etc.
Looking for the Aurora Borealis or just stargaze (our night skies are not interrupted by any ambient light). Other “on your own” activities include birding and wildlife viewing, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, photography, looking for wildflowers, biking, nature walks, strolling along the Klinaklini River, sunrises, sunsets, exploring, practicing your rustic cooking skills, or just plain relaxing in an atmosphere without traffic, industry, shopping malls, cell phones...
