Manicured Lawn - Newport, Rhode IslandWow!  What an elegant place Newport, Rhode Island is!  With it’s “summer mansions” that are large enough to play a football game in. Newport is really a city on Aquidneck Island.

Relaxing - Newport, Rhode IslandAlthough the population is under 30,000, it is a thriving city. It was founded in 1639.  Newport has one of the highest concentrations of colonial homes in the nation, in the downtown Newport Historic District, one of three National Landmark Districts in the city. Many of these homes were restored in the late 20th century through grants made by Newport resident Doris Duke.

It is safe to say that if it were not for Doris Duke, Newport would have lost dozens of their beautiful old homes.

Architects Inn - Newport, Rhode IslandWe stayed at the Architect’s Inn Bed and Breakfast which is owned by Nick and Brian who are two of the nicest young men we have met in a long time.  It is located in the old George Champlin Mason Estate.  Mr. Mason was a very famous architect in the area.

In 1873 Mason designed his own home, Woodbine on Cottage Sunnyside Place. For his house, he chose the Swiss Chalet style which he had grown fond of during his travels in Europe.  Brian and Nick have furnished the house with lots of antiques in every room.

They serve a scrumptious sit down breakfast every morning. For decorations on your plate they use sliced fruits as well as flowers from their estate.  Breakfast is a major part of staying there.  We met people from England as well as from all the country.

Their Bed and Breakfast is located just a short walk from downtown in a very quiet neighborhood.  A sweeping porch on one side of the house is perfect for breakfast in the morning or a glass of wine in the afternoon. They serve fresh baked goodies and Sherry to guests in the afternoon.  They are located at 2 Sunnyside Place.  Their phone is: 877.466.2547.

Mansion - Newport, Rhode IslandNick and Brian are extremely hospitable and took us on a great tour of the city.  If they are booked up when you want to stay there, you are in luck, as they also own another Bed and Breakfast call the Inn Bliss just a few blocks away.  We first met Nick and Brian when we were staying at the Grand Resort and Spa in Ft. Lauderdale last January and when they found out we were planning a trip to New England last summer, they insisted that we stay with them.

Mansion - Newport, Rhode IslandNo visit to Newport would be complete without a tour of some of the major mansions.  We visited Marble House, Belcourt Castle, The Elms as well as the famous Doris Duke mansion, Rough Point.  One evening we attended a Candlelight “Champagne” tour of one of the mansions.

To see how the very rich (before taxes) lived, be sure to tour at least a few of the mansions.  Actually they have about a dozen mansions to tour.  And remember, these mansions were only a “summer house” for these millionaires, most of who all lived in New York City the rest of the year.

Mansion - Newport, Rhode IslandOther sights to visit in Newport includes the National Tennis Hall of Fame Museum. It is so interesting with the real grass. We play tennis but have never got the chance to play on real grass.

Be sure and visit the Lighthouse as well as the literally dozens and dozens of historical places.  We also visited the Church where President John Kennedy and Jackie were married.  Other places includes the August Belmont Statue and Monument, Christopher Columbus Statue and Monument,  Fort Adams and just a walk through downtown and the off streets are a real treat.

There are a lot of restaurants in Newport and you can also take yachting trips or have dinner on a yacht.  Anytime of the year is a great time to visit Newport.  It really is like stepping back into time 100 years.  We took more photos visiting Newport than in any city in our travels.

The town people are extremely hospitable.  But the most hospitable were Nick and Brian who own the Architect’s Inn Bed and Breakfast.  They LOVE their city and it shows!  We are looking forward to return again in a couple of years to see more and do more things in Newport.  More cities should have someone like Nick, Brian in their towns to promote them.
