Caernarfon: A Medieval Wonder
By Andy Banner-Price, Plas Dinas Country House, Caernarfon, Wales

Caernarfon is one of those areas that offers everything all in one place…you can lie on a long sandy beach, yet turn round and see the majestic horizon of mountain views; you can have a cream tea in the sunshine in a cosmopolitan cobbled stone square overlooked by an imposing Medieval castle, yet be in snow capped stunning mountains within 15 minutes.

For the more adventurous there’s an abundance of activities from water sports to rock climbing, karting to shooting yet the area is also full of historic and interesting tourist attractions such as several castles, houses, gardens and museums.

Unique experiences include entering underground worlds of copper or slate mines, or the hydro-electric museum in Llanberis.  The Isle of Anglesey is less then 15 minutes drive and also offers a huge number of visitor attractions and also a ferry link to Dublin in Ireland.

Welsh is still a common spoken language in this area of North Wales, so you can experience a real sense of local culture – why not try some Welsh cakes or Bara Brith (a local fruit cake).

The quality and variety of accommodation is surprisingly good and the majority of hotels and guest houses source produce from local suppliers, allowing you to taste the best flavours available from sausages to pate, cheese to yogurts.

Restaurants too are keen to show off the fantastic quality of local produce and several places now boast Michelin stars.

Contrary to popular belief, whilst those wishing to take the scenic route can go via the mountains to enjoy the scenery and water falls, the fastest route is along the M6 motorway and the A55 dual carriageway bringing you from the Midlands to North Wales in around two hours.

With improved road links, most tourist attractions are now within easy reach and there’s rarely any need to travel more than an hour in any direction.

There’s one thing for sure, you certainly won’t get bored in Wales, neither will you tire of the stunning scenery.  Everywhere you look there are fantastic outlooks with beautiful panoramic views.  North Wales is still a natural landscape, untouched by industrialization.

It’s rare to find such a natural habitat.  Come to Wales and experience it for yourself.

Plas Dinas Country House is an ideal base, just outside Caernarfon offering 4 star luxury in 10 individually styled bedrooms.  It dates back 400 years and is the ancestral home of the Armstrong-Jones family, of which Anthony Armstrong-Jones (Lord Snowdon) was probably the most famous as he was married to HRH Princess Margaret who often stayed here.

The house retains its family atmosphere and still has much of the original portraits, furniture and memorabilia.  To experience it for yourself or perhaps join one of their special events such as a Murder Mystery weekend, please take a look at their website www.plasdinas.co.uk.
