Section 1: EDITOR'S NOTES

Julie Bullard, In Memoriam, 1941-2006

We just received very sad news from a reporter in Maine. Julie Bullard, who for a long time was the proprietor of the Church Street Inn in San Francisco, California before moving to Maine to run a B&B there, was killed along with her daughter and two others at her inn on Sunday. Details here:

http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/006995.html

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims. Julie was a wonderful woman and welcoming host to all who stayed with her at Church Street over the years, and we are very saddened to hear of her untimely passing.

The OC: Newport Beach & Laguna Beach

Newport Beach

Ok, so we have to admit, the whole OC thing had us snowed. We visited Newport Beach expecting to see Ryan and Marissa and Seth and Summer, Newpsies flocking to the Country Clubs, and houses like small countries with pools to die for.

All those things are probably there, somewhere (ok, except the fictional characters <grin>). But for the most part, they are invitation only, behind huge closed gates with guardhouses nearly large enough to qualify as houses themselves.

If you are a die-hard OC fan, here's a map to places featured on the show.

But Newport Beach is more than just a back-drop for a TV show on Fox. There are wonderful beaches, cute shopping districts, a great mall, and more sunshine than you know what to do with.

Laguna Beach

Right next door to Newport Beach on the map, Laguna Beach is miles away in attitude. With a fantastic beach and a funky artistic appeal, Laguna Beach is a more let-your-hair-down sort of town. Laguna Beach is home to The Pagent of the Masters, a Summer art show where real people pose in recreations of paintings of the masters for 90 minutes each night.

Those of you who are fans of the TV Show Arrested Development will recognize this show from the episode In God We Trust, where George Michael and his grandfather recreate one of Michaelangelo's famous works (ok, so we watch waaaaay too much TV). :)

There are many other great art events in Laguna Beach - see http://www.lagunabeachinfo.org/ for more info.

Laguna Beach was also the home of Scott's first gay bar experience, the Boom Boom Room. We were told the bar had been sold to a developer, and was closing, but just got some good news - the new owner has given the bar a reprieve, and it will be open for at least another year. :)

Casa Laguna
2510 S. Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA
1 949 494-2996
innkeeper@casalaguna.com

http://www.casalaguna.com

Casa Laguna is a beautiful spanish-style property just a few minutes outside of central Laguna Beach, right on the Pacific Coast Highway. The inn impresses from the start, as you climb a dramatic stairway surrounded by lush tropical plants to a large solid wood door that leads into the heart of this charming retreat.

Just inside the doorway, past the lobby, is a beautiful, quiet courtyard paved in beautiful spanish tile, and surrounded by palm trees and the original (restored) adobe architecture the inn is famous for. Breakfast is served out here in the morning, but it's also a perfect spot for a lazy afternoon cup of coffee with a good book.

Breakfast is prepared by Chef Mark McDonald, who believes in the slow foods movement. The inn is gay owned, and Franscois was the perfect host when we visited last month.

On clear days, the sky speads out above you in glorious blue, and on foggy mornings (like when we visited), the wisps of cloudy fog lend the place a more mystical feel.

This is complemented by the spa services available on site, including the wonderful massage table available on one of the upper patios, above the pool and with great ocean views.

There's a beautiful pool on the property, surrounded by the resort's lush lanscaping.

The inn was originally built in the 1920's as a private residence, and has been used by artists ever since as a refuge and unique vantage point on the coast. The inn features 20 rooms with ten unique layouts, incouding a 600 square foot cottage separate from the rest of the rooms.

  • Many rooms feature a fireplace and ocean views. Inn amenities include:
  • Expanded gourmet continental breakfast
  • Afternoon refreshments
  • Hypoallergenic feather bed
  • Luxurious robes
  • DVD & CD Player, collection of classic movies
  • Hair dryer, iron, refrigerator, coffee maker
  • Telephone w/voicemail
  • High speed internet access
  • Use of business center
  • Use of beach chairs/umbrellas
  • Air conditioning in every room

The whole resort has a classic yet fresh feeling, and this is a great place to stay in Laguna Beach, far enough from the center of town to ensure peace, quiet and privacy, but close enough to easily enjoy everything Laguna Beach has to offer.

Perfect for business travelers, couples looking for a romantic getaway, or folks who want to meet other travelers from around the world in a comfortable, upscale setting.

Eiler's Inn
741 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach
1 949 494-3004
chaz@eilersinn.com

http://www.eilersinn.com/

Eiler's Inn is a bit closer to central Laguna Beach - from here you can walk to almost everything easily. The inn is couples oriented, so you won't find a lot of families here, and no pets either.

While this is not an ocean view property per se, there is an upper patio with a nice, partial ocean view here, where guests can relax and sunbathe or enjoy a good book. Individual rooms do not have ocean views.

The property also has a large central courtyard, surrounded entirely by the buildings inf the inn, where a beautiful fountain will soothe away your cares. Breakfast and wine & cheese are served here in this tranquil setting.

Rooms feature beautiful antiques, pillow-top mattress beds, and full sized showers in the in-room bathrooms.

This is a great location if you want to be in the middle of town, lose to all the action.

Balboa Island

Balboa Island is a small island in the inner harbor, with one street of very cute shops and blocks of interesting beach bungalows. You can walk down Marine Avenue and buy, say, an OC sweatshirt, or something much more unique.

Once you reach the end of Marine Avenue, turn right and walk down Bay Front, an all pedestrian "road" that fronts the bay. You'll have great harbor views from here, as well as a free walking tour of some very nice ocean-front homes.

It's also fun to walk a bit around the neighborhood, checking out all the little houses on this island.

Once you reach the western end of the island (it's maybe a ten minute walk from Marine Ave.), you can take a ferry across the harbor to Lido Island and the Boardwalk Shops at Newport Pier.

Fashion Island

We're suckers for nice malls, and Fashion Island (not really an island, except in the sense that it's an island of retail in a sea of offices.

This outdoor mall has a beautiful Koi Pond (above) and one of the coolest fountains we've seen - the water gushes out from the center, pushing the water out like an outgoing wave, then subsides.

There are some great stores here, and a California Pizza Kitchen and a Cheesecake factory, two of our favorite restaurant chains. There's also a full-size carousel in the mall, and a great movie theater (as well as a second one right across the street).

Out on Vacation: Traveling in the Gay Friendly World:
"Welcome to Arizona"

First of all, Arizona is one of the very few States that has an OFFICIAL website for gays visiting their beautiful State. Go to: www.visitgayarizona.com and you will find almost every question you would ever want to know about visiting their State. In addition they list dozens of gay owned and gay friendly businesses along with their addresses, phone numbers and websites.

Arizona is basically divided into 5 distinct areas: Metropolitan Phoenix, including the cities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale and Chandler, is the nation's sixth largest city in population and covers more than 450 square miles in land area.

A colorful tapestry of cultures - from Hispanic and Native American to the legendary Wild West - is woven throughout southern Arizona, a land that thrived under the flags of both Spain and Mexico before becoming part of the U.S.

South of Flagstaff in the beautiful Verde Valley area of north central Arizona, Sedona including Jerome and Prescott is red rock country. Many gay men and lesbians - once they experience the friendly atmosphere and small town charm of Sedona - decide to relocate here permanently. Women will find numerous lesbian-owned accommodations.

Although Arizona is a landlocked state, its desert dwellers cool off in the warm waters of the state's many lakes. In fact, Arizona boasts one of the highest rates of boat ownership in the nation. Home to the world-famous London Bridge, Lake Havasu is both a water lover's paradise and a desert lover's dream. More than 400 miles of stunning coastline offers exceptional water sports, including fishing and skiing, kayaking, jet-skiing and houseboating. The western region of the State can be amazing.

Northern Arizona is the Southwest at its best. It is a photographer's paradise, a shopper's delight, a hiker's exploration, a history buff's treasure trove of cultures and a boater's bonanza. Although only a matter of hours from Phoenix deserts, Northern Arizona can be a world away in climate. With elevations up to more than 12,000 feet. If you have never visited the Grand Canyon, it truly is one of the wonders of America. Stay at the historic El Tovar one night. The scenic beauty is beyond description. If you are hardy enough to take the mule excursion to the bottom, then by all means do so. Otherwise just stay at the hotel and have a drink, look out the window and view the scenery.

We have been to all five areas and always have a very interesting time. An auto is an absolute MUST when visiting Arizona and be SURE and keep plenty of gas in your tank! It is truly unbelievable how many gay owned B and B's there are in Arizona plus dozens that are extremely gay-friendly. Even in the small towns, gay life is everywhere.

Among our favorite places to stay in Arizona are: LUNA VISTA B And B in Rimrock (just South of Sedona) Kala and Frank are two of the most wonderful people in the world. http://www.lunavistabandb.com/

An utterly "beyond FABULOUS experience staying there. The ROYAL ELIZABETH B and B in Tucson is wonderful. Jeff and Chuck know how to keep their guests returning year after year. http://www.royalelizabeth.com/

And The Casa de San Pedro in Hereford is great. Karl and Patrick have done a wonderful job. http://www.bedandbirds.com/

In Phoenix, there are literally dozens of gay bars to choose from so just check out your bar guides before going. Whatever your into, there is perfect bar just for you!

There is a very strong gay community in Arizona and some of the resources can be found by going to these: http://www.azpride.org/, http://www.prescottpridecenter.com/, http://www.cochise-pride.net/ , http://www.flagstaffpride.org/ and http://www.tucsonpride.com/ Their local gay newspaper is a great source for information: http://www.echomag.com/.

Always remember to have a good time when traveling and TALK TO EVERYBODY! And, "don't cry because it's over, SMILE because it happened and you were a part of it!

For more infomation on traveling, email Donald and Ray at gaytravelers@aol.com or visit their web page at: http://www.hometown.aol.com/gaytravelers.

Gaytravelers@aol.com is written by Donald Pile and Ray Williams, a gay couple of over 34 years of "togetherness" who live in the greater Kansas City area. They are also Antique Dealers and have toured the entire United States traveling in search of antiques and for fabulous "gay meccas" of which they have found several.

On their 25th Anniversary, Elizabeth Taylor wrote, "Congratulations to the two of you on your 25th Anniversary! You have surely reached an important milestone in your lives together, and I send you my best wishes as you celebrate tonight". Candice Gingrich wrote, "Your enduring relationship is another shining example of what "family values" is and should be about... trust, security, love commitment. Continued success in your togetherness".

Don and Ray write articles for several gay and lesbian newspapers and magazines. You can email us at: gaytravelers@aol.com or visit their web page at: www.hometown.aol.com/gaytravelers.
