Located on 100 private wooded acres, The Highlands Inn is an exceptionally comfortable women's resort in the heart of the White Mountains, a year-round vacation destination. With its spacious common areas, large fireplaced living room, and fresh flowers throughout, the Inn is reminiscent of a Victorian country home.
New Hampshire's new marriage equality law went into effect on January 1, 2010, making same-sex marriage legal in the state of New Hampshire. The Highlands is one of very few inns or resorts dedicated to serving the lesbian community. Since our first commitment ceremony in 1985, hundreds of couples have held civil union and commitment ceremonies at the Inn. With our years of experience and dedication to marriage equality, we are uniquely prepared to help women achieve their dreams of marriage.
The property includes three buildings: the Main Inn with 13 rooms, the Farmhouse with 5 rooms and a full country kitchen, and the rustic Cottage. The present innkeeper, Grace, bought and completely renovated the buildings and grounds in 1983. The Highlands Inn has operated as a lesbian/gay resort since then.
The Highlands has long been recognized as one of the finest women's inns in the country. PlanetOut chose The Highlands Inn as "one of the most romantic lesbian destinations on the planet." The Inn has also received Pink Choice awards every year since 2007.
Rooms are individually decorated with antiques, fine linens, original artwork, and comfortable king, queen, or double beds. All rooms have private baths, air conditioning, VCRs, and DVDs. Several rooms have special amenities, such as a fireplace, large private deck, or 2-person spa.
Spectacular fall foliage, great winter skiing, lush mountain springtime, all summer sports, antiquing, tax-free shopping, and excellent restaurants are available in all directions.
Whether women come to The Highlands Inn for a romantic getaway or just to relax, they're sure to find a welcoming atmosphere.
The Main Inn is the center of activities; both the Farmhouse and the rustic Cottage are just a short walk from the main building. The day begins with a healthy country breakfast served in the large, sunny breakfast room. In the summer, guests enjoy the heated pool with its surrounding sundeck. Other popular amenities include two large whirlpool spas (indoors and outdoors), the extensive lesbian/gay video/DVD collection, and 15 miles of hiking/cross-country trails right on the property.
And sunsets are not to be missed! A few minutes spent relaxing on the lawn outside the Main Inn will often reward guests with a spectacular mountain sunset. In the fall, the same vistas are ablaze with the White Mountains' world-famous autumn foliage.
Evening activities center around the spacious living room and its great stone fireplace, where guests congregate for conversation, a glass of wine, or a game of Scrabble. And over the past several years, the Highlands has sponsored a Women's Concert Series. Concerts are held throughout the year and are free to guests. There's always plenty to do at this very special women's place!
