Warm Island Hospitality and Aloha Spirit of old Hawaii – Hale Makamae Hawaii Bed & Breakfast offers comfortable, spacious suites surrounded by beautiful tropical serene gardens. Two suites with living room and kitchenette, one studio, all with separate entrances and private bathrooms.

Our Hawaii Bed and Breakfast is located in the beautiful and tropical area of Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii, 30 minutes from Hilo (International Airport) and the Volcanoes National Park, 5 minutes to Pahoa in Leilani Estates. Hale Makamae is a licensed and quality inspected Bed & Breakfast surrounded by expansive lush botanical gardens in an ambience of old Hawaii.

Our Hawaii B & B is only minutes away from new lava plunging into the ocean, thermally heated hot ponds (Ahalanui Park), beautiful coastal parks (Mac Kenzie Park, Isaac Hale Park), Kapoho tide pools for snorkeling, Lava Tree Park, Kehena Black Sand Beach, old Kalapana (covered by lava in 1990) and steam vents in an area full of history. The charming town of Pahoa offers a selection of very good restaurants, stores, and galleries.

Our Gourmet Island Breakfast is served in our breezeway every morning with a variety of tropical fruits, cheeses, meats, pan cakes, french toast, eggs, different types of bread, cereals and your choice of Kona coffee, teas and juice.

All three of our suites have private bathrooms and private entrances and look into the beautifully landscaped garden; The Garden Suite and the Makamae Studio are easily accessible with their first floor location. The Lanai Suite is on the second floor with a balcony overlooking our garden. Patios, porches and the lanai with lawn chairs, outdoor furniture and a gas BBQ grill are there for our guests to enjoy the tranquility of nature or a starry tropical night. The kitchenettes in our larger suites are equipped with microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, toaster, coffee maker, dishes and more. The Lanai Suite also has a stove top. All rooms have ceiling fans, walk-in closets and great air circulation.

As your hosts, Petra is originally from Germany and John from the US East Coast. We moved back to Hawaii in 1997 and have been on the Big Island since 1999. Both of us speak English and German.

We have traveled to many countries and stayed in small hotels, bed & breakfasts and other accommodations. As a result of our own travel experience we are happy to offer our guests a high standard of comfort, quality and service. We know the Big Island of Hawaii well and can give you many suggestions and tips on what to do and where to go.
