It was in 1718 that the Spanish built and maintained The Mission San Antonio de Valero - now known as The Alamo. An additional fort was built - San Antonio de Bexar - to provide protection to the region. Spain's first step to colonize Texas. Original colonists were Spanish Canary Islanders, to whom many Texas families proudly trace their roots. San Antonio remained the chief Spanish, then Mexican stronghold in Texas until the Texas Revolution - "Remember the Alamo!" Today, San Antonio is a vibrant part of Texas and the many diverse cultures that have been in the region since the 18th Century.
