Amsterdam, one of the oldest cities in Europe has a multitude of fascinating things to offer. One of the most liberal cities in the World, gay rights have been guaranteed now by law and the Dutch government is now on the path to truly realize the acceptance of gays and lesbians in society. A much more difficult task but taken very seriously. During Gay pride in 2008 the minister of Education and Culture participated in person with a ministerial boat during the Canal Pride. In 2009 it is expected that the Ministry of Defense will participate as well. We can expect then to see our soldiers in uniform. Many other projects such as school education are on its way.
Gay Events
The Amsterdam Gay calendar is marked by two events, the Queens birthday on the 30th of April and the Canal Pride in the First weekend of August. When we write the Queen’s birthday we do mean the Monarch of the Netherlands. In Amsterdam we take that opportunity to organize parties. The straight part of the population goes out on the streets of Amsterdam to drink, dance and have garage sales on the streets. The population of Amsterdam then doubles by visitors.
Popular clubbing events are the Bear-Necessity party and the Rapido party. This year back again the Mother of all parties Roxy Resurrection in the Odeon. The first one was fabulous.
