Something different this morning - a guided tour of the Roman Forum. We booked the tour with Luca at Rome Gay Tours. The tour began at Piazza Venezia, so named because the building that was once the embassy of the city-state of Venezia sits on the west side of the plaza.

What an amazing place!
We just returned from somewhere I'd never heard of before - Ostia Antica (as distinguished from the current town of Ostia) - an excavated Roman town that dates back before the birth of Christ. Ostia was once the port city of Rome, about 18 miles northeast of the city.

We left the church, avoiding the two gypsy pickpockets outside, and walked around the piazza, taking time to get some photos of the lovely fountain in the middle. We also passed one of the many outdoor bookstores that seem to be particular to Italy, where they sell used and antique books.
