" BOWLING GREEN, VIRGINIA BED & BREAKFAST - CLOSE TO WASHINGTON, DC AND RICHMOND, VA "
Bowling Green offers a free, self-guided walking tour of historic homes. We're near the center of town on Main Street, by the Bowling Green Baptist Church, , just 2 blocks from the Caroline County Courthouse, originally designed by students of Thomas Jefferson. A large outdoor mural shows the town’s 1864 occupation by Union troops, and was painted by Sidney E. King. Each October, on the third Saturday, Bowling Green hosts the Harvest Festival - a wonderful time to visit. Caroline County has a wide variety of historic sites to see, including Jackson Shrine, where Stonewall Jackson died. A State Route 301 marker between Port Royal and Bowling Green shows the area of the Garrett Farm, where history says Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth was killed. Caroline County also has five sites related to the Virginia Civil War Trails, Lee vs. Grant tour. Two of these sites are within walking distance of ColumnWood; all are within a 15-minutes by car. Paramount's Kings Dominion theme park is just 20 minutes away by car. Historic Fredericksburg and Colonial Beach are interesting places to explore, and there are wonderful area vineyards and Civil War era battlefield parks. We're happy to make suggestions and give directions. The Broaddus family originally built ColumnWood in the early 1900's - the home was originally going to be one large house, but sometime in early construction the family decided to build it as a duplex for Katherine (Broaddus) Burt and her brother, Dr. John Broaddus. It was the first duplex in Bowling Green, and has been called the "Duplex" for decades. With 5,000+ sq. ft. feet of hardwood floors, ColumnWood B&B is one of Bowling Green's largest historic homes, and has spacious high ceilings, pocket doors and many large windows to let in the morning light, with their original "wavy" glass. Most of the interior doors have transom windows overhead, and 4 of the 6 fireplaces have their original tiles and coal grate. Several rooms also have decorative columns. These columns, along with the columns on the front and back porches, and our huge sycamores, some of which were likely planted before the Civil War, inspired us to call the bed and breakfast "ColumnWood."
ColumnWood Bed & Breakfast provides accommodations in the perfect location for your next vacation - come relax with us in the quiet, small-town atmosphere of Historic Bowling Green, Virginia.
