Casa de los Quercus (House of the Oaks) is in a rural area of the sparsely populated (265,000) county of San Luis Obispo.  We are halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, close to coastal Highway 1, and interior Highway 101.

Our one bedroom apartment has views of the oak studded countryside, with wonderful sunsets over the hills.  This fully furnished Atascadero apartment (at 1,400 foot elevation) is on the roadside part of an 11 acre, forested and sage-covered parcel.  

The owners, Dana and Steve have groomed several trails up the sometimes steep hillside, and from the top of Belmonte Peak (1,700 feet), one may glimpse the Pacific Ocean on clear days.  The adventurous can continue over the peak and head to Click’s Meadow, complete with a seasonal creek.  Animals, such as wild turkeys, deer and the usual skunk visit the property.

One of the main area attractions is Hearst Castle, only 40 minutes north on Hwy 1.  A little farther up the coast are rookeries of huge elephant seals and the southern part of the scenic and rugged coastline of Big Sur.

San Luis Obispo county has more than 250 wineries (mostly reds), with great tasting rooms (some free), and often host special events throughout the year.  Olives and lavender are also making a showing in San Luis Obispo.

Most of the towns in the county are small (all under 45K) and most are spaced about ten miles apart.  The town of San Luis Obispo, twenty minutes south, is home to a Spanish / California mission from 1772, and Cal Poly State University.  Morro Bay, with a public golf course, sport’s fishing (in season), kayaking and marine museum is just fifteen minutes away down Hwy 41.

We have many artists and craftspeople in the area, sharing their talents.  Galleries are in most towns, along with many antique stores.  There are six golf courses, all within forty five minutes of Atascadero.

The county also has many parks, most with great trails and views.  Bicycle trails are all around, but our part of the highway is not safe for cyclists.

You can either create your own meals in the complete kitchen or head to one of the fine restaurants in the area.

We are centrally located in San Luis Obispo county: five minutes to Atascadero (about 27K residents), ten minutes to Morro Bay, twenty miles to Paso Robles, half an hour to the Five Cities area in the southern part of the county, fifteen minutes to the seaside town of Cayucos and twenty-five minutes to the quaint village of Cambria (on the way to Hearst Castle).

The apartment was built in 2008, and is fully furnished, from crystal stemware to a flatscreen TV over a fireplace.

The comfortable, queen-sized bed has views of the oak-covered hillside.  Bedroom, bath and kitchen linens will be freshened every three days.  There is plenty of inside storage space for longer visits.  The carport is near the stairway to the apartment, and an additional car space is available.
