Puerto Viejo is the undiscovered jewel of Costa Rica, attracting backpackers and surfers - a huge melting pot of cultures.  The foreigners come from South America, Canada & Europe - three distinct cultures living together. There are also BriBri natives, who have lived here for centuries, and the descendents of the African Caribbeans which initially came over as slaves for the banana trade, and Costa Ricans of Spanish decent.

The 2002 census found people from 49 different countries in a population of just over 2,000.
