The fire moved in sometime in the afternoon of the 28th of October with a fierce fire tornado that took down five of the neighboring homes as well as ours...the plants and wildlife suffered even more....we escaped with the seven cats, a few material things...and our love of the mountain We are rebuilding, and have great plans for the new Artists' Loft, scheduled for completion in late 2005. The new loft will be a special retreat for two to four persons, with views from the peaks of the Cuyamacas to the islands off the coast of Southern California. A new approach to bed and breakfast is planned, as well as a private loft for working artists to use as they like. As the woods and animals have suffered even greater loss than we, there will be ongoing programs to restore and revive the sanctuary. Guests are invited to participate and lend ideas to the process, as they are moved...we will also be offering a variety of workshops in the arts... photography, printmaking, drawing, writing, pastel.... and many more. One thing is to be remembered: the spirit of Julian, and of the Artists' Loft did not perish. We and the town are much as they were, more sober, more humble but much wiser for the meeting with Great Nature. We invite you to Julian to be a part of the rebirth of both the town and our beautiful artist's retreat.
