" NEWLY RESTORED
1847 NATIONAL REGISTER HOTEL "
The 1847 National Register American Hotel offers nine guestrooms (one is handicapped accessible) with private baths and telephones with modems (rooms are fully air conditioned and heated). Room rate includes full breakfast. Each guestroom is individually decorated with Schumacher and Waverly fabrics and and a mixture of period antiques. There are two floors of porches for our guests to use full of wicker and rocking chairs for relaxing. In 2002, we have added a slate patio and fountain off the back of the hotel overlooking the lawn and woods. The slate used for the patio is actually old sidewalks from nearby Herkimer, NY.
Inside the hotel you will find a restoration worthy of the Preservation league of New Yorks 2002 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The pub/bar area has been built from black walnut taken from the current hotel driveway (largely overgrown from years of neglect) and provides an intimate setting for an afternoon cocktail. During the winter months, we light the fireplace in the pub and pull the leather chairs up around it for a cozy, intimate atmosphere.
Our dining room seats approximately fifty people and offers a romantic setting for guests anytime of the year. Chef Lee Woolver prepares a menu of what he refers to as "classic new american," a cuisine that reflects fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. Look for updated classics of traditional American comfort foods. Our restaurant is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. We have been reviewed by two capital district papers, Metroland: (four stars) and The Schenectady Gazette: ("The American Hotel bursts with good taste"). The American has also been featured in a New York Times article, (see link) and will soon be appearing on the Food Network and HGTVs Restore America.
The American was built by Nicholas LaRue of nearby Esperance, New York in approximately 1847. It operated as a hotel until the 1950's, and then as a religious retreat until it closed in 1989. By 1996, when current owners Garth Roberts and Douglas Plummer purchased the building, it was near collapse. After an extensive four year renovation, the American proudly reopened in May 2001.
The village of Sharon Springs is aproximately 25 minutes from Cooperstown, 45 minutes from Albany, and 31/2 hours from New York City. Sharon Springs was once a watering hole for the rich and famous who came to "take the waters" here and Saratoga Springs. After years of decline and neglect, the once crumbling resort village is experiencing a grass-roots revitalization of its Main Street along while it enjoys its current National Register status.
