South Africa at the foot of the great and mysterious continent of Africa offers a world in one.
Imagine going to bed and listening to the almost wicked sounds of the hyaenas laughing, waking up to the sounds of the great outdoors, the leopards and lions (a male lion's roar can be heard from kilometers away), and going to bed as the sun rises over their nightly hunting expeditions, listening to the calls of hundreds of bird species about to start their day (over 900 species have been recorded, including the only few colonies of penguins on this huge continent). Or the too-numerous plains species to mention such as antelope, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra.
The thrill of a safari, where sometimes we can get within meters of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lions, and during a night safari, maybe even to see the elusive leopards.

A South African Safari

“Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.” (W.C. Fields)
Fortunately for my three traveling companions and me, there were plenty of corkscrews on our virgin safari. In fact, the abundance of everything we could have imagined and things unimaginable until we experienced them was pleasantly surprising, to say the least.
For this native New Yorker, now a resident of the Southwest, there were no childhood dreams of Africa. The asphalt jungle was familiar and unthreatening. Other jungles? Too scary to contemplate. But after adventures across the U.S., throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America, and the South Pacific, South Africa and its neighbors begged for contemplation.
This adventure began in a land where gay rights are guaranteed in its Constitution and gay weddings are legal. South Africa joined the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and Canada in December 2005 as the enlightened fifth nation to bless same-sex marriage. And just as black is beautiful, gay is good in the country where they’ve renamed a flamboyantly gold, blue and yellow Bird of Paradise flower after the heroic Nelson Mandela.
